The project Distribution and conservation of carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia in Macedonia was realized in cooperation with students and experts from the Department of Botany and Dendrology of the UKiM Faculty of Forestry in Skopje and other professional institutions and organizations.
The Project of 7b class from the elementary school Lazo Trpovski from Skopje was awarded with honorable mention by the jury on the 15. International Environmental School Contest GEO 2013, which is traditionally held in Hamburg, Germany.
The 7th grade pupils took part on the contest with a research project Distribution and conservation of carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia in Macedonia (more information about the project can be found on the following link 1 and link 2) made under the tutelage of the teachers Daniela Radevska and Stefan Simovski.
The pupils realized their project in cooperation with students and experts from the Department of Botany and Dendrology of the UKiM Faculty of Forestry in Skopje, Institute of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje and the Biology Students' Research Society at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje.
The great interest of the jury put the fact that carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia (known under the Macedonian common name 'muvolovka' or 'rosichka') in our country is an endangered species and is to be found only on the mountain Vlaina, in the vicinity of Judovi Livadi (in english Juda’s Meadows), on an altitude of 1,090 meters, near the city of Pehcevo.
The main topic of the year 2013 school contest in Hamburg was Biodiversity in our neighbourhood (more information about the contest and winning projects can be found on link 3 and link 4).
The contest is organized by the magazine GEO in cooperation with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and is traditionally organized every year on the World Biodiversity Day, 15th June.
On this year's contest took part more than 90 schools from 6 countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Czech Republic and the Republic of Macedonia) with 632 projects. Despite the strong competition the project of the elementary school Lazo Trpovski was among 35 best projects and for its quality deserved this proper recognition.
